VIRTUAL OPEN HOUSE PROJECTS #0017454 AND #0018009
OPEN UNTIL NOVEMBER 25, 2024
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is hosting a virtual open house for proposed improvements along Hwy 278 in Covington, Georgia from Exit 90 to Emory St. These projects will construct two new roundabouts, install a center median and improve pedestrian access.
GDOT’s virtual open house is open until November 25, 2024. Anyone can submit their comments about the project before that date. Access the open house at:
https://us-278-sr-12-corridor-improvements-0017454-0018009-gdot.hub.arcgis.com/
The virtual open house is to discuss two projects. Though separate, the projects would build at the same time. These two projects (#0017454 and #0018009) represent an estimated $20.8 million investment. You will have to enter your comments twice, once for each project. It is important that GDOT receives your feedback on both of these projects.
Project #0017454 would construct the roadway improvements consisting of these features;
- Re-align the I-20 West entrance and exit ramp about 500’ east to a new roundabout on US 278
- Install a new signalized Restricted Crossing U-turn (R-cut) at US278 and Turner Road
- Build a center median on US278 between the I-20 West ramp and SR81 (Emory St.), a distance of 3,300’, removing the existing two-way center left-turn lane
- Maintain the existing traffic signal at US278 and West St. and
- Install a new two-lane roundabout at US278 at SR 81 (Emory St.)
The roadway improvements are intended to address both roadway safety concerns and reduce delays. According to Georgia DOT, the corridor experienced 613 crashes between 2014 – 2018.
The project’s center median would eliminate the option for motorists to turn left into or out of adjacent businesses. Instead motorists must make right-hand turns to enter or exit. The two roundabouts on either end would provide motorists with a U-turn option.
Project #0018009 would improve pedestrian access. It would create and/or upgrade pedestrian and cyclist facilities.
Creating consistent sidewalks and multi-use paths throughout the corridor.
Creating improved lighting, landscaping and signage.
We encourage your support of these projects known as Phase I of the Hwy 278 CID Master Plan
